Mr. Sugarman represents individuals in the full range of employment and wage and hour law matters. He has practiced extensively in the area of class action wage and hour litigation in state and federal trial and appellate courts, with a specialization in overtime pay cases, as well as individual wage and hour matters. He has also helped represent clients in numerous matters involving breaches of employment contracts. Mr. Sugarman joined the firm in 2002 after practicing in the area of civil rights and general civil litigation for several years, including as an Arthur Liman Fellow at the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California, and an associate at Baker Botts in Austin, Texas.

Mr. Sugarman is a graduate of Yale Law School (J.D. 1997) and Brown University (A.B., Phi Beta Kappa, 1991). Following his graduation from law school, Mr. Sugarman was a judicial clerk for the Honorable Joseph E. Irenas, United States District Court, District of New Jersey.

Mr. Sugarman is a member of the State Bar of California and the State Bar of Texas (inactive status). He is admitted to practice in all California and Texas state courts, the United States Court of Appeal for the Ninth Circuit, and the United States District Courts for the Northern District of California, Central District of California, and District of Colorado. Mr. Sugarman is a member of the California Employment Lawyers Association, the National Employment Lawyers Association, and the Bar Association of San Francisco.

Mr. Sugarman has lectured on wage and hour law topics at seminars and conferences presented by the American Bar Association, the National Employment Lawyers Association, the American Conference Institute, Bridgeport Continuing Education, and the Northern California Employment Law & HR Forum. His commentaries on issues in wage and hour law have been published in the San Francisco Recorder and Employment Law 360. Since April 2010, Mr. Sugarman has been a member of the Board of Editors for the Fair Labor Standards Act treatise published by the American Bar Association Section of Labor and Employment Law (Matthew Bender), and is the principal author of the chapter of that treatise addressing “hybrid” Fair Labor Standard Act-state law wage and hour class actions which will appear in the treatise’s forthcoming edition. Mr. Sugarman is also a chapter monitor for the attorney fee awards chapter of the ABA’s Employment Discrimination Law treatise (Matthew Bender).

Mr. Sugarman presently serves as a member of the board of directors for the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California, and is a member of the board’s executive committee. He is also a volunteer supervising attorney at the Workers’ Rights Clinic of the Employment Law Center-Legal Aid Society of San Francisco, where he has also lectured on class actions.
